What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
I believe I was born to do this work. It's something I heard from people in my personal life and in the professional world, working in administrative positions at non-profit organizations. I pursued clinical work and finally reached a moment in my own journey where I was able to create space to witness and support the experiences of others. I am always honored to be present when clients share their stories with me. My focus on the power of the mind, body, and spirit to heal has been a common theme throughout my career. I've found that the experiential, present-centered approach of Gestalt therapy is one of the best methods for facilitating this connection.
What would you want someone to know about working with you?
My clients know and feel that I offer presence, compassion, empathy, and feedback that facilitates the personal growth they desire. I invite and challenge my clients to identify and own the behaviors, thoughts, actions, and beliefs that hold them back. My mission is to help clients develop a deep connection with themselves and transform how they live and love their world. I believe in striving to live a wholehearted life marked by authenticity and hope.
If there was one thing you wish people knew about the therapy experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?
One of the most difficult practices we can engage in is the process of self-reflection: becoming self-aware and developing a commitment to owning our story. The therapeutic process is unique in that it is an opportunity for people to be in a space that allows for reflection, developing new awareness, and offers the opportunity for change. When we develop a deeper understanding of the parts of ourselves that once served to protect us, we can honor them by acknowledging the lessons they were meant to teach us and build upon the inner strength that already exists. If you could pick one or two books that influenced your approach to therapy what would they be and why?
Daring Greatly and Rising Strong by Brené Brown, along with Brené Brown’s The Daring Way™ philosophy, have changed the way I live my life on a cellular level. I would not be the person or the therapist I am today without this work, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share it with my clients.
Is there any research-based work you’ve done that you found particularly exciting and how has that informed your practice today?
As a Gestalt therapist, I work with clients in an experiential, present-centered manner that integrates the mind, body, and spirit. I believe my role is to help clients become aware of all parts of themselves through the perspective that human beings are born with one need: to be loved. My approach is equally influenced by Brené Brown's research. Her methodology, The Daring Way™, informs us of what it means to develop shame resilience and live an authentic and wholehearted life.
