What was your path to becoming a coach? What inspired you to choose this profession?
After a 15-year career in media, marketing, and tech, I wanted more. Transformational conversations have always been a part of my DNA. While building my marketing career, I volunteered as a coach and counselor and, eventually, I found I was enjoying coaching my team and building company culture much more than my marketing responsibilities. I became a coach so I can spend my time doing what I love: helping others create a life and career they love. Together, I work with my clients to step back from the expectations of others, create clarity around their purpose and vision, and then clear barriers so they can go for it.
What would you want someone to know about working with you?
Coaching focuses on what’s happening in the present and how it impacts you today and in the future. It is goal- and action-oriented and can be applied as much to professional performance as personal development. Success in coaching is dependent on what both the coach and client bring to the relationship. All of my coaching relationships begin with a complimentary get-to-know-you session over the phone. There are a lot of different coaching styles out there, so this call is a chance for us to get a sense of our compatibility. If it feels like a match, we’ll jump into more details about our alliance. Coaching sessions happen primarily via Zoom or the phone, but I am happy to meet clients in-person at their office or elsewhere. We can test all formats to determine what works best for you.
How does someone know it is time to hire a coach?
When there's a delta between where you are and where you want to be, it's time to hire a coach. While coaching is broader and deeper than just creating accountability, it's founded on being goal-oriented and clearing away whatever is blocking you from achieving your goal, or going above and beyond what you ever considered possible.
What do you think is the biggest barrier today for people seeking a coach?
I like Annie Dillard's quote, "how we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." I find that sometimes individuals do not work with a coach because they don’t believe that creating what they want is urgent. We live in the space of "someday." Someday we will live a life we love. Someday we will have the career we know we deserve. Unfortunately, someday never comes and often it transitions to “it’s too late,” and then that becomes the barrier. Coaching is about putting an objective observer in your corner, listening for what you want, helping you clear out the fears and excuses getting in your way, and taking an unconditional stand that you can achieve what your true self knows you want and deserve.
What excites you most about the evolving mental health landscape?
I am excited about how taking care of one’s mental health is becoming as important as taking care of one’s physical health. I love to see all the nuanced approaches arising in therapy and coaching, and how individuals are accepting and incorporating these methodologies into their daily lives. We live in a society that dictates that we have to do it all on our own. More and more people are seeing the error in that approach and are building tribes around them to help maximize their fulfillment.
