Question 1

How is EMDR different from other talk therapy?

Accepted Answer

You may be wondering how EMDR differs from talking through what happened. Alongside conversation, EMDR uses short sets of bilateral stimulation while you hold a memory in mind, with pauses to notice what comes up. Ask a therapist how much talking their EMDR sessions involve, and browse therapists in Surprise who offer EMDR on Alma.

Question 2

What does an EMDR session look like?

Accepted Answer

It helps to picture the hour before you go. An EMDR processing session might begin with a check-in, move through short sets of eye movements or tapping with pauses in between, and close with grounding before you leave. Each therapist paces it differently, so ask how they run theirs. Filter therapists in Surprise for EMDR on Alma to compare.

Question 3

What happens in the preparation phase of EMDR?

Accepted Answer

Knowing what comes before processing can make EMDR feel more manageable. In preparation, your therapist explains how EMDR works and helps you build resources to steady yourself, such as calming or grounding techniques. You can ask what that looks like with them. On Alma, read profiles of therapists in Surprise who offer EMDR and send that question before you book.

Question 4

Is EMDR short-term or ongoing?

Accepted Answer

Knowing what you are signing up for makes it easier to start. A therapist can tell you how they tend to pace EMDR, how often you would meet, and when you would check in on how it is going. On Alma, read profiles of therapists in Surprise who offer EMDR and ask about pacing when you reach out.

Question 5

How can I tell whether to try EMDR?

Accepted Answer

Trying something new costs time and money, so it makes sense to want a clearer picture first. Describe what is going on when you reach out, and ask the therapist what they would expect the first few sessions to cover. On Alma, filter therapists in Surprise for EMDR and save the profiles whose description of their work feels closest to what you need.

Question 6

How do I know a therapist is really trained in EMDR?

Accepted Answer

If training matters to you, it is reasonable to check rather than assume. Alma's filter reflects what each therapist lists on their own profile, so treat it as a starting point, not a credential check. Ask where they trained in EMDR, how often they use it, and whether they combine it with anything else. Filter for EMDR in Surprise on Alma, then ask before you book.

Question 7

Can I find therapists in Surprise who offer EMDR so I can skip the drive to Phoenix?

Accepted Answer

Wanting care close to home instead of a long drive is a good reason to search locally first. Start with therapists in Surprise, then add Peoria, El Mirage, and Sun City West to widen the in-person list. Virtual sessions bring in therapists from across Arizona. Filter the Surprise list for therapists who offer EMDR and compare those nearby pages.

Question 8

Will my insurance pay for EMDR?

Accepted Answer

Knowing what you will pay makes it easier to commit. Your plan and your clinician decide coverage, not the method. On Alma, filter therapists in Surprise who offer EMDR and are in-network with your plan, and Alma checks your benefits before you book. FSA, HSA, and HRA cards can also be added to Autopay at enrollment.

Question 9

Can I do EMDR online near Surprise?

Accepted Answer

Fitting sessions into a busy week is a real concern. Each Alma profile in Surprise shows which formats that therapist offers, and whether a clinician prefers to do EMDR in the room is worth asking them directly. Online sessions also open up therapists licensed in Arizona, who can see you while you are in Arizona.
