Question 1

What is DBT?

Accepted Answer

If you have heard DBT mentioned and want to know what it involves, here is the short version. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a structured talk therapy that teaches skills for handling intense emotions, getting through hard moments, and dealing with other people. It balances accepting yourself as you are with working to change what is not working. On Alma, you can filter for DBT directly.

Question 2

What does a DBT session look like?

Accepted Answer

It helps to picture the hour before you go. A DBT session might start by reviewing notes from your week, move to one hard moment and the skill that could have helped, and end with practice to try. Each therapist runs it a little differently, so ask how they structure theirs. Filter therapists in California for DBT on Alma to compare.

Question 3

Is DBT always a group program?

Accepted Answer

This is worth settling before you book, because two different things go by the same name. A full DBT program pairs individual sessions with a separate skills group, while some clinicians work one to one and draw on DBT skills without the whole program. The commitment and cost differ. Therapists in California who offer DBT on Alma can tell you which they provide.

Question 4

How long does DBT take?

Accepted Answer

It is a reasonable question, and the answer turns mostly on which kind of DBT you sign up for. A full program with a skills group runs differently from individual work that draws on DBT skills. A clinician can tell you which they offer and what it usually looks like. On Alma, filter therapists in California for DBT and ask before you book.

Question 5

Is DBT a good fit for what I am dealing with?

Accepted Answer

You might be weighing DBT against other approaches you have read about. A licensed therapist can explain how DBT would look for the concern you bring, and whether they would combine it with anything else. Read a few profiles of therapists in California who offer DBT, then ask the one that stands out how they would start with you.

Question 6

What should I ask about a therapist's DBT training?

Accepted Answer

Wanting to know someone has real training is a fair part of choosing a therapist. When you reach out, ask how they learned DBT, whether they had consultation or supervision while using it, and how much of their week it makes up. On Alma, read the profiles of therapists in California who offer DBT and compare how each describes their training.

Question 7

How can I find a therapist who offers DBT and has openings soon?

Accepted Answer

If you want to start soon, availability is the filter to use first. Filter therapists in California who offer DBT by openings, including evenings and weekends, then narrow by insurance and format. Each profile shows how the therapist works, so you can reach out to the one that fits and book when you are ready.

Question 8

Will my insurance pay for DBT?

Accepted Answer

Knowing what you will pay makes it easier to commit. Your plan and your clinician decide coverage, not the method. On Alma, filter therapists in California who offer DBT and are in-network with your plan, and Alma checks your benefits before you book. If a skills group is billed separately from individual sessions, ask about that before you start.

Question 9

Can I do DBT online in California?

Accepted Answer

Fitting sessions into a busy week is a real concern. Each Alma profile in California shows which formats that therapist offers, and whether a clinician prefers to do DBT in the room is worth asking them directly. Online sessions also open up therapists licensed in California, who can see you while you are in California.
