Question 1

What does EMDR stand for and how does it work?

Accepted Answer

It is reasonable to want the acronym spelled out. EMDR is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is set out in phases, starting with history and preparation before any memory processing, which is done with guided eye movements, tapping, or tones. A therapist can explain each phase. Question 2

What does an EMDR session look like?

Accepted Answer

It helps to picture the hour before you go. An EMDR processing session might begin with a check-in, move through short sets of eye movements or tapping with pauses in between, and close with grounding before you leave. Each therapist paces it differently, so ask how they run theirs. Filter therapists in Long Beach for EMDR on Alma to compare.

Question 3

How does a therapist decide I am ready for EMDR processing?

Accepted Answer

It is reasonable to want a say in when processing starts. Readiness is something your therapist assesses with you, and you can tell them if you want to slow down. Ask what signs they look for and how they check in along the way. On Alma, filter therapists in Long Beach for EMDR and ask about readiness when you reach out.

Question 4

How many sessions of EMDR will I need?

Accepted Answer

If you are asking about sessions, it is usually because of cost or how much of your week this will take. There is no set number a page can give you; it varies by clinician and by what you are working on. Ask a therapist how they usually structure EMDR and how you will review progress together. On Alma, filter therapists in Long Beach for EMDR to start.

Question 5

Is EMDR a good fit for what I am dealing with?

Accepted Answer

You might be weighing EMDR against other approaches you have read about. A licensed therapist can explain how EMDR would look for the concern you bring, and whether they would combine it with anything else. Read a few profiles of therapists in Long Beach who offer EMDR, then ask the one that stands out how they would start with you.

Question 6

What should I ask about a therapist's EMDR training?

Accepted Answer

Wanting to know someone has real training is a fair part of choosing a therapist. When you reach out, ask how they learned EMDR, whether they had consultation or supervision while using it, and how much of their week it makes up. On Alma, read the profiles of therapists in Long Beach who offer EMDR and compare how each describes their training.

Question 7

How do I find therapists in Long Beach who offer EMDR without searching all of LA County?

Accepted Answer

A county as big as Los Angeles can make the search feel endless, so it helps to start close. Search from Long Beach first, and check Huntington Beach, Anaheim, and Irvine, since Orange County may be closer than the rest of LA. Virtual sessions widen the list. Filter the Long Beach list for therapists who offer EMDR and compare office addresses.

Question 8

Does insurance cover EMDR near Long Beach?

Accepted Answer

Cost is often the first worry, and the approach itself does not change how your benefits work: coverage depends on your plan and the clinician you choose. Alma verifies your benefits up front, so you know your expected cost before you book. On Alma, you can filter therapists in Long Beach for EMDR and for your insurance at the same time.
