EHR Checklist: Find the Best Fit for Your Therapy Practice
Looking for the perfect EHR? Use this checklist to evaluate platforms with time-saving, compliant, and user-friendly features for mental health clinicians.
Last updated: November 2025

Consider these details when selecting an EHR that best suits your practice.
What goes into a solid Electronic Health Record (EHR)? Whether it’s the ability to submit claims through integrated medical billing or calendar syncing, understanding your non-negotiable versus preferred features is an essential step in selecting a tool that’s best for your practice.
"Must-have" EHR features for clinicians
- HIPAA compliance and data security. You know this one—any software that deals with protected health information (PHI) must be HIPAA compliant. Ideally, the tool will also make it easy to export your documentation in case of an audit, a client request, or if you decide to change EHR platforms.
- New client intake. Your EHR should make it easy to welcome new clients to your practice and collect their insurance information and symptom assessments like PHQ-9 and GAD-7.
“Nice-to-have” features
- Telehealth platform within or connected to your EHR. If you host online sessions, integrating your EHR with your telehealth tool streamlines scheduling, appointment reminders, and even note taking through AI “listening” software. Important reminder: Your telehealth platform and AI tools must be HIPAA compliant.
- A place for clients to submit payments. With an integrated payment platform, clients can easily book appointments and submit their copays or cash pay balances in the same secure platform.
