Question 1

What are Somatic Experiencing and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy?

Accepted Answer

Seeing two names come up can be confusing. Somatic Experiencing and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy are the two somatic trainings named most often, and they differ in method. Asking which one a therapist uses is a fair question. On Alma, read profiles of therapists in California who list somatic therapy and compare how they describe it.

Question 2

What do the first somatic sessions involve?

Accepted Answer

The start can feel uncertain, so it helps to know it is usually gentle. First sessions tend to cover what brings you in and what helps you feel steady before anything harder. A therapist can walk you through their first few sessions. Browse therapists in California on Alma who offer somatic therapy and ask when you reach out.

Question 3

Will a somatic therapist use touch?

Accepted Answer

If touch is a concern, raise it early. Some therapists use no touch at all, and others may suggest it with consent. Ask how they handle consent and what the alternatives are. On Alma, read profiles of therapists in California who offer somatic therapy and put the question to them when you reach out.

Question 4

How can I check a therapist's training in somatic therapy?

Accepted Answer

It is reasonable to want the label to mean something. The filter shows what a therapist lists, not a verified credential, so asking is normal: where they trained and how often they use it. Somatic covers several distinct trainings, so it is worth asking which one. On Alma, save a few therapists in California and ask before you book.

Question 5

How can I find somatic therapy near me in California?

Accepted Answer

It helps to know where to begin when you already know what you are looking for. Search Alma's California directory for somatic therapy and use the filters for insurance, format, and availability. The list can be short, so adding virtual sessions can widen it. When a profile feels right, reach out with a question or two about how they use it before you commit to a session.

Question 6

Will my insurance pay for somatic therapy in California?

Accepted Answer

Cost is often the thing that decides whether you start at all, so it helps to know early. Your plan and the clinician you choose set what you pay, not the method itself. Alma checks your benefits before you book and shows your expected cost, and you can narrow therapists in California to those in-network with your plan.

Question 7

Can I do somatic therapy online in California?

Accepted Answer

Fitting sessions around work, family, or travel time is a real constraint, and online can help. Each profile shows which formats that therapist offers, and whether a clinician prefers to do this work in the room is worth asking directly. Virtual sessions also open up therapists licensed in California, who can see you while you are in California. Filter by format in California.
